We are honored to have Alonso Burgos present
the following seminars at the 2010 Breeders Edge®
Auction:
BREEDING ALPACAS FOR THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY:
THE PACOMARCA EXPERIENCE
Breeding alpacas and winning shows is fun. But making
a breeding plan to produce the kind of fiber that the
textile industry demands internationally could mean
a different thing. How do we prepare for that? Setting
the precise goals; defining the selection criteria for
the animals to be raised; deciding the areas where the
main efforts will be devoted; planning for the proper
infrastructure; analyzing the breeding results and placing
the correct "textile value" on the animals
should be part of the plan. In Pacomarca we have gone
over all these issues and would like to share our results.
THE ALPACA TEXTILE INDUSTRY
There are textile industries in many parts of the world.
But, what makes the alpaca textile industry so special?
Why has it sprung mainly in Peru? The alpaca fiber can
be used in many different ways, although the international
market demands certain products and qualities more than
others. Which are these products? How much are they
worth? The US has been breeding alpacas for over ten
years and some very beautiful animals and herds have
been established. Can the US breeders install an alpaca
textile industry in their own country? What are the
alternatives?
ALPACA FIBER: FROM THE FARM TO THE
STORE
The road alpaca fiber must go through in order to become
a fine garment that is purchased at a high price by
the end consumer is certainly long. What steps must
it follow? How do we select which kind of fiber to use
for determined end product? Which are the most demanded
colors? Expertise and proper machines are needed, but
also competitive costs, climate and availability of
raw material. And finally, once you have your finished
good: can it be sold easily? At what price?
